THE CHERAW ARTS COMMISSION


The Cheraw Art Commission is dedicated to encouraging an appreciation of and participation in the Arts by all citizens of Cheraw community. Throughout the year, the Cheraw Arts Commission provides a variety of programs for all ages in the Community. Included are programs in theater, dance, music and other performing arts, visual and literary arts, and the allied arts of design and crafts. Periodically, the Cheraw Arts Commission presents dinner theaters, a concert series, the SC Mobile Arts Truck and fund raisers such as the Big Band Dance, White Elephant Sale and Membership Drive.

Gallery Shows: The Art Gallery, located in the left wing of the Community Center, features the work of amateur & professional artists & Photographers, student work, crafts, and traveling exhibits. The Gallery is opened throughout the year except for July & August.

Other events include a summer theater arts camp, children's theater series, and preschool theater series.

AREA ATTRACTIONS


NASCAR:
Internationally famous stock car racing is held in nearby Darlington.

The South Carolina Cotton Trail:
Stretches from Clio to Bishopville, SC with Cheraw in the middle.

Carolinas Back Country Trail:
Cheraw is also part of this trail which traces the Revolutionary War in the interior of North & South Carolina and the National Civil War Trail.

BOATING


Cheraw State Park has boats and kayaks available for rental by the day or hour as well as comfortable cabins, camping area with hookups for the RV traveler, tent sites, groups camps, and hiking trails.  Day use facilities include an 18 hole championship golf course, playground equipment at the lakeshore, picnic areas, and scenic walking paths.  

Riverside Park has a boat ramp for local access to the Pee Dee River and a day use picnic area at the river. 

Numerous ponds and small lakes dot Sand Hills State Forest and Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge.  Carolina Sandhills

FISHING


Cheraw State Recreation Area, Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge (headquarters on Hwy 1; visitors need to pick up a map and regulations); Sandhills State Forest; Southside Park; Pee Dee River Riverside Park; Lake Wallace - Bennettsville.

Nonresidents 14 older must have a license to fish in any fresh waters.

South Carolina has a reciprocal fishing agreement with Georgia only.

Licenses are available at hardware and tackle shops.

BIKE, HIKING & HORSEBACK TRAILS


There are excellent trails in Cheraw State Park 843-537-9656,

Sandhills State Forest 843-498-6478, and

Sandhills National Wild Life Refuge 843-335-8404.

 

THE MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAILS


Sand Hills State Forest 9 mile loop. This tight single track goes through pinelands, streams and tight turns. The entrance is on US 1 near Patrick at the headquarters of Sand Hills State Forest.

EQUESTRIAN FACILITIES


12 mile Cheraw Trail.  Equestrian Facilities & Bridle Trails Cheraw State Park - camping & Bule Horse Trail 7.3 miles, Sandhills Horse Trail 6.5 miles and White Horse Trail 6.5 miles.  There is also a section for horse & buggies and wagons. 

 

There is a fee for trail use, & you must get a permit from Sandhills State Forest headquarters on US 1. There are also Trails in Cheraw State Park On US 52 south.  Sandhills State Forest - camping & H. Cooper Black Jr. Horse Trail (also has a 24 stall barn and a horse arena).

 

HIKING TRAILS


Cheraw State Park:
Turkey Oak Trail 4.5.

1.9 mile Nature trail in with this as well as .5 mile round trip walk along the boardwalk on the edge of the lake.

 

Sand Hills State Forest

Offers trails at Sugarloaf Mountain and a short nature trail 1.7 Miles.

Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge:
Features a woodland pond trail 1 mile and Tate's Trail 2.5 miles. (Near McBee).

Cheraw's Riverside Park:
1.5 mile trail along the Great Pee Dee river.

ARROWHEAD PARK - State Road - 4 lighted baseball fields, lighted soccer & football field, lighted walking trail, playground, picnic shelter, and landscaped park

CHERAW STATE PARK – Mountain bike trail, golf, boating, camping, picnicking, archery, bridle trails, nature trails and fishing. It also has cabins and large group camps.

CASTON PARK - Entrances at Market, Huger & High Streets - 4 lighted tennis courts, lighted youth baseball field, playground and landscaped park area.

COMMUNITY CENTER - 200 Powe Street - Community Center Basketball Court, classrooms, teen center, game rooms, art gallery, administrative office, and banquet facilities.

HUCKLEBERRY PARK - Huckleberry Drive - Greenway Playground
and picnic area.

RIVERSIDE PARK - East Church Street - picnic and shelter, Pee Dee River overlook, boat ramp and dock, nature area, and walking trail.

SOUTH SIDE PARK - Roddy Street - lighted softball field, soccer field, nature areas, and river access.

SUGAR LOAF MOUNTAIN - 17 miles south. Take US I to Ruby Hwy. then north and watch for sign after about 3 miles. Turn here on Scotch Road and follow signs.
