Annexation

Property owners may request annexation into Town if the property is located adjacent to the town limits. Annexation may result in an actual reduction of expenses for the property owner. With annexation police and fire services become immediately available as well as street lighting and solid waste collection. Out-of-town customers currently pay higher rates for water and sewer charges as well as certain recreational program fees. Building Permits

Permits are issued through the Codes Enforcement Office and the Clerk's Office for all new construction and for repairs and renovations. Business Licenses

License are issued for anyone operating a business inside the Town of Cheraw and are available through the Town Clerk's Office at 843-537-8400. Any person that may be soliciting at your residence or who may wish to provide a service for a fee should be properly licensed by the Town. If you have any questions about whether a company is licensed to operate in the Town of Cheraw call the Town Clerk's office at 843-537-8400.

Historic Preservation

The Cheraw Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. The boundaries include approximately 35 blocks in the historic residential and commercial areas of town. The preservation and protection of the Cheraw Historic District has always been important to the community. The Cheraw Appearance Commission was formed in 1982 to oversee new construction, demolition and rehabilitation in the district. If you own a home or business located within the historic district and expect to make changes to the property please let us assist you with the approval process. Municipal Airport

The Cheraw Municipal Airport located approximately 3 miles northwest of town along S. C. Highway # 9 offers exceptional facilities and services for a general aviation airport. Lynch Bellinger Field includes a 4,400 feet long lighted primary runway. General aviation and jet fuel are available along with maintenance services on-site. The new terminal building offers a pilot's lounge, conference room and mapping for future flights. If you have questions please contact the airport at 843-537-9626.

Code Enforcement

The Code Enforcement Officers provide inspection of all construction work performed in town and verifies that contractors have the appropriate licenses. They are also involved in code complaints which can range from overgrown lots, abandoned vehicles, dilapidated housing and inappropriate signage. Parks & Recreation Services

The Town has one of the most respected parks and recreation departments in the southeast. Leisure programs and activities for people of all ages and abilities and recreational facilities are located throughout the community. The Town offers quality parks, playgrounds, playing fields, tennis courts, picnic shelters, a community center, hiking/biking trails, and open space for all residents. Continued upgrades are being implemented in all areas throughout the year and quality programs are being added to meet the needs of the citizens. Cheraw Parks, Recreation & Cultural Services

Cheraw Arts Commission

Provides opportunities for participation in a variety of activities & events 843-537-8422. Classes include the following: exercise, gymnastics, karate, dance, adult tap, art, line dancing, crafts, quilting, ceramics, swimming, tennis, nature camp. Athletics include: baseball, softball, golf tournaments, Dixie Baseball tournaments, football, soccer, cheerleading, volleyball and basketball.

The Theatre On The Green

  The Town of Cheraw's theater is housed in a historic building on the Town Green and seats 250 people. Under the direction of the Arts Commission, the theater, with its stage, sound and film projector system is used for the presentation of plays, concerts and movies and is also available for civic and community meetings.  For rental information contact recreation email or 843-537-8420

Police Services

The Cheraw police department is located on Second Street in Cheraw. The department has been quite involved in crime prevention and investigation, traffic control and patrol services. The department has an active Community Oriented Policing program (COPS) with officers routinely patrolling the community and working with public housing residents. The department also has a very successful K-9 program whose efforts have paid off in the ability to track individuals and in detecting illegal drugs.  For assistance call the Police Department at 843-537-7868.

Fire Services

The Fire Department is located at 12 Chesterfield Highway and operates the Class 4 department with six full-time personnel and 25 part-time members. The department provides fire inspections, fire suppression, pre-fire planning and education. 843-537-5941

Water Service

The Town provides water service to customers throughout Cheraw and some located outside the town limits. The water is taken from the Great Pee Dee River and is processed at the town's 6 MGD plant facility. The Utility Department has 1.8 million gallons of water in elevated storage tanks. Rates for out-of-town customers are $ 15.00 for the first 2,000 gallons and $ 3.10 per 1,000 gallons for everything over the first 2,000. In-town customers have a discounted rate of $ 5.00 for the first 2,000 gallons and only $ 1.20 per 1,000 gallons for everything over the first 2,000 gallons. Zoning

The Town attempts to protect properties and property values throughout the community through its Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance. This plan sets forth an outline for the orderly growth and development of the community. The Planning & Zoning Commission address comprehensive planning questions and rezoning requests.
